Fogo Island Employment

CHIEF ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER (CAO)

Fogo Island is located off the northeast coast of Newfoundland, northwest of Musgrave Harbour across Hamilton Sound and just east of Change Islands with a population of 2,244 and is connected to mainland Newfoundland by ferry.

On March 1, 2011, the Towns of Fogo, Joe Batt’s Arm-Barr’s Islands-Shoal Bay, Seldom-Little Seldon and Tilting and a portion of the Fogo Island Region (Stag Harbour, Island Harbour, Deep Bay, and Fogo Island Central) amalgamated to form the Town of Fogo Island.

In the early 20th century, the Fisherman’s Protective Union was formed. It was a form of co-operative with general stores owned by fishermen for fishermen. There are three (3) processing plants currently operating on Fogo Island, a shrimp plant in Seldom, a crab, capelin, and cucumber plant in Fogo and a ground fish plant in Joe Batt’s Arm. Today the Fogo Island Cooperative continues to successfully stake footholds in the new fish markets.

The island attracts a wide range of visitors interested in its history, local wildlife, and other attractions. There are seven (7) hiking trails including Lion’s Den, Brimstone Head, Turpin’s, and Joe Batt’s Point Trail. There are several local museums and heritage properties including the Marine Interpretation Centre, Lane House, Brett House, and Bleak House. In addition, there are many locally owned restaurants, bars, and arts and cultural retail establishments.

Fogo Island Inn, a sleek Nordic style hotel perched on stilts at the Atlantic Ocean’s edge is an inspiring collaboration between traditional and modern. The restaurant, one of EnRoute Magazine’s best in Canada, brings that combination to your table, with a gourmet cuisine infused with the bounty of the island and the Inn’s gardens.

Fogo Island is not only a great place to live but has become a mecca for tourists from all over the world.
